About Phuthai Esarn Restaurant

Let me introduce you to Phuthai Esarn Restaurant, a spot I always bring up when people ask where to find real-deal Thai flavors in Wellington. Tucked away at 38 Cambridge Terrace, Te Aro, Wellington 6011, New Zealand, this Thai restaurant feels relaxed, lively, and confidently itself from the moment you walk in. Phuthai Esarn Restaurant isn’t trying to be flashy; instead, it leans into bold aromas, comforting plates, and that unmistakable Esarn-style punch that keeps conversations flowing between bites. I usually describe it as the kind of place where you can pop in for a quick bite after work or settle in for a longer dine-in session with friends, because the menu and mood easily support both. The food comes out designed for sharing, with small plates that make it easy to sample different textures and heat levels, and there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options that don’t feel like afterthoughts. At the same time, meat lovers and spice chasers will find plenty to get excited about, especially late in the evening when late-night food really hits the spot. Service options like takeaway and delivery make it practical for busy days, while dining in lets you enjoy the casual buzz of the room. Drinks play a supporting role here in a very natural way, with beer, wine, spirits, and cocktails available to match the food rather than overpower it. Alcohol is present, but it never steals the spotlight from the kitchen, which keeps the experience grounded and food-focused. When I talk about Phuthai Esarn Restaurant, I usually emphasize how approachable it feels, how quickly it becomes a regular stop, and how effortlessly it fits into everyday plans, whether that means a spontaneous dinner, a relaxed catch-up, or a flavorful escape from the usual routine, with quick service, friendly energy, and a menu that invites repeat visits without feeling repetitive.

The food was absolutely delicious, the best curry I've tried. I will definitely go again.

Phu Thai Esarn One of my favourite Thai restaurants in Wellington, we decided to spend Sunday evening in this beautiful restaurant off Cambridge terrace! We enjoyed a variety of dishes from their new menu, their standard menu karee puff was flaky with a great flavour, and the new baked mussel in tom yum sauce, wow, had no idea these would go so well together, so in love! I'm not usually a mussel lover (clams girl here) but these would be the go to way of eating mussels for me now! We then warmed up with the super rich and creamy tom yum soup with heaps of prawns, I was used to a more diluted version but these should really be the standard setting bodies for tom yum soup! We also enjoyed the minced duck larb and the humungous deep fried blue cod in the tangy sauce, even their rice was beautifully presented (need to order separately), and the perfect ending to our meal was the new fresh mango sticky rice! Huge pieces of mango, drizzled with that creamy coconut sauce, must try! They've been around for a long time and this was more of a re-visit, a staple Thai restaurant that maybe needs to be revisited by you too?

Thai cuisine is my favourite and Phuthai did not disappoint. I've been craving for toong thong (money bags) for a long time and finally got to have it again. My son and I had toong thong (money bags), rice with stir fried vegetables & cashew and thai milk tea. Will definitely return to try their other authentic thai dishes. A special thanks to Bee, our lady server who was very pleasant and service oriented. The chef also shared his friendly smile towards us with matching hand wave. I recommend this restaurant to all who wish delicious authentic thai meals.

Great Thai place in Wellington! I really liked their service, atmosphere, and they have some exceptional food items! We loved the Tom yum grilled mussels, Tom yum seafood, and their whole fish was something else!! The lime and lemongrass whole fish was yum, very sour (so be aware), and the green peppercorn stems were a bit surprising and a lot to bite into. I would probably prefer if they were loose and not on their stems to reduce the volume I bit into, but otherwise all good. I will come back to try their other whole fish options. The green curry was good but also a bit sweet. Lovely service and great atmosphere.

Great Pad Thai and Chicken Na Kai. Really good flavour in the Pad Thai. Excellent service when answering the phone and picking up the food

An ok Thai restaurant. Squid was obviously reheated. Chicken for Khao soi was dry(breast meat, not brined). Apart from that it was ok.

If I could give it 11 stars, I would! This was one of the best meals I have ever eaten and I am actually not exaggerating. We eat a lot of Thai food, it’s one of our favorites, there is a duck dish here with fresh (undried) black pepper and Kefir lime leaves, that just about put me out. Wow! $7 corkage fee if you want to bring your own wine and they have plenty on site as well. Incredibly kind service and yummy tea. We will be back! The picture was all that was left once I realized I hadn’t taken a picture. That is the fresh black pepper.

Lovely little Thai restaurant with a warm, authentic atmosphere, complete with beautiful Thai decorations like paintings and carvings. The service was excellent. They’re polite, attentive and caring. The staff checked in with us just enough to make sure we were happy with our meals and had everything we needed. The food was delicious and tasted quite authentic. We tried the entrée tasting platter (a sample of each item), the green curry, and the pad Thai. Everything was tasty and the portions were generous. We were really happy with our experience and will definitely be coming back! :)
